On Saturday 25th Februrary there will be a job fair at National Student Pride, taking place at the Brighton Dome from 1-5pm. Entry is free.

Employers will include Ernst & Young, IBM, Accenture and American Express. There will also be a host of local and national LGBT organisation stalls.

Australian Internships are offering a Stipended Internship Program for students who want to visit Australia and work on something related to their academic study. The stipend is $600 – $900, monthly travel and meal allowance. However, there is a registration and visa fee of about $3000.

According to the email, they’re promoting to us specifically, so the best way to find out whether a stipend is available for one of their internships is to contact them and say you’re from Sussex.

• Length: 20 – 26 weeks (Full Time – approximately 40 hours per week)

The Stipend Internship Program is open to candidates meeting the following criteria:

• They are between 18 – 30
• Their internship field is directly related to their educational background
• They are currently enrolled in a tertiary course; or they are a recent graduate within 24 months of course completion
• They have minimum of 3 months relevant work experience related to their area of study
• They have advanced English language skills

IT’s not just forboys is a one day event run in London that gives women studying IT a chance to learn more about job hunting and (more importantly) gives them a chance to network with, and learn more about, industry experts.

Eduwise Limited are offerring a chance to do a partially funded five week Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course.  This TEFL course is accredited by Trinity College, London.

The deal is this, you go and work for Eduwise for five weeks helping to mentor people in using the English language. This work is voluntary, but at the end of it you get a TEFL qualification. The course normally costs £950, but by working through it the course will only cost £195, and the course is free if you are currently claiming unemployment benefits.

EDUWISE MUTUALITY PROGRAMME

(Including Funded Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL)

The Programme

The Mutuality programme was designed by Eduwise for the UK Border Agency / European Integration Fund in order to bring together non-EU nationals, wishing to settle in the UK and those who are resident here and to build capacity to allow these non-EU nationals to;

-Develop their English Skills to integrate better into UK society, obtain citizenship etc.

-Obtain employment where possible,

-Deal with UK bureaucracies etc.

As part of the programme you will be acting as a volunteer mentor to a small number of beneficiaries who do not have English as their first language. This will be;

-In groups, delivering English lessons

-On a one to one basis, coaching learners in exam skills, CV building etc., other skills such as numeracy.

We ask you to deliver a minimum of 12 hours’ mentoring work. In order to be eligible as a Mentor you must be an EU or UK Naturalised Citizen, normally resident in the UK.

Training

We undertake to train you as a Mentor in order that you can carry out your mentoring function. This will be over an intensive period of 25 sessions to professional industry standards and will include;

• An introductory background to English Grammar and Phonology,
• Typical methodologies for teaching language,
• Giving Information, Advice & Guidance,

These workshops will take place at our centre in Witney, Oxfordshire. These intensive periods are organised periodically across the year and we will give you start dates etc. on application. For the non-intensive model, please see part-time programme below.

Modules

-Teaching Practice with Groups. (Extensive help will be given in designing your lessons, materials etc.). These can be included within your mentoring responsibilities and will take place in the mornings. Your lessons will be observed by an Assessor who will give you feedback to help you improve. You will also need to complete retrospective evaluations on your teaching and observe a small number of classes delivered by other teachers.

-English Grammar and Phonology. You will be given a series of sessions on parts of speech, verb forms and other aspects of the English language. We will also look at intonation, stress and the phonemic alphabet. You will be expected to pass a test on language awareness after these input sessions.

-Learner Profile. You will be expected to work 1:1 with a learner of English and design a series of lessons to address their specific language problems and write a report. This can be included within your mentoring responsibilities. You may conduct the initial meetings and planning during the training stage and deliver the lessons etc. afterwards.

-Unknown Language. You will need to attend a short course in a foreign language and write a report about your feelings. These lessons are designed to give you first-hand experience in what it is like to be in a language learning situation where there is no recourse to translation.

-Materials Evaluation. In this you will need to write about  2 sets of materials you have used in your lessons, their strengths and weaknesses and ideas for improvement etc. You will then need to discuss these with an Assessor in a semi-formal presentation.

-On going mentoring support. You will need to meet up with your learners by appointment for the requisite number of mentoring sessions in CV building, Exam coaching etc. These sessions will normally be 1:1.

Part-time Programme

We run a part-time programme at our centre in Reading. It is scheduled to run over 12 weeks September to December, January to March and April to June. You will still need to take some time off from work but this will be one day per week. The day is decided based upon balancing preferences from the participants and local conditions. The inclusions are the same as for the intensive programme. Additional Mentoring Support is normally carried out.

Professional Development and Other Opportunities

Volunteer Mentors on the Mutuality Programme may wish to consider having their newly gained competences officially recognised and certificated for a small fee. Eduwise has access to these qualifications and will advise on the steps necessary. Opportunities include;

-The Level 5 Trinity College London Certificate which is recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OFQUAL) and British Council giving it status and credibility world-wide for both the ESOL sector (those learners wishing to integrate into an English speaking community) and the EFL sector (those learners visiting an English speaking country or learning English in their own). Please bear in mind there are other teachers’ courses on the market that do not carry this quality assurance. The Certificate in TESOL is seen as a benchmark qualification internationally because of its insistence on face to face provision and assessed teaching practice. The cost for Mutuality Volunteer Mentors to formalise the Trinity Certificate in TESOL through Eduwise is £195.00 to cover certification and administrative costs. This compares very favourably with the cost of the certificate through other routes, which is £950.

-For those working in, or who obtain a position in Further Education (e.g. the College Sector) the Trinity Level 5 Certificate can be extended through some additional written work and mentoring to satisfy the requirements of the Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS). The cost for Mutuality Volunteer Mentors to formalise the PTLLS is £100. Again, this is very favourable, as some colleges may typically charge up to £500.

-The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Certificate in Teaching English for Business Purposes is delivered via moodle or on CD Rom. Opportunities will be made available for additional mentoring opportunity to deliver business based classes and to take the written examination. Costs available separately.

After 2 years’ full-time relevant teaching experience, you may wish to enrol for the Level 7 Trinity College London Licentiate Diploma in TESOL, a qualification which is designed for those wishing to refine and expand their awareness of language and methodological issues. The award of the Trinity Diploma indicates that the holder is considered to be a fully competent and effective practising member of the profession. Costs available separately.

Support

We have permanent, highly qualified and experienced staff, some of whom act as External Moderators for various awarding bodies, including Trinity College London, which is one of the 2 awarding bodies most prominent in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Others contribute to major publications used as coursebooks by teachers of English throughout the world.

We have a normal maximum in each training group of 12 volunteers, giving ample opportunity for small group and one to one support, particularly in preparing lessons. Volunteer Mentors receive feedback on every assessed lesson.

A pre-course self evaluation and development pack is supplied which, when used in conjunction with the recommended background reading, allows candidates to prepare themselves in the areas of language awareness and phonology.

This investment of time prior to attendance considerably eases the workload of those less familiar with the intricacies of English form and structure.

Materials

We have access to plenty of teaching resources and equipment, including a bank of computers, we do however suggest that mentors should provide an A4 lever arch ring bind folder and plastic wallet inserts and bring their own equipment for production of teaching materials such as scissors, glue etc. An OHP pen and NON PERMANENT whiteboard marker for your own use can also save time. A computer, though not essential, is also useful for planning lessons at home, however you can make use of our computers, printer etc. As we use interactive whiteboard, any computerised learning material can be shown via projector.

Course books, audiotapes and videos are available. Video recording facilities are provided.

Mentors are also recommended to purchase, for background reading, use during the programme and as tools in their future work, three books

Application, Selection Procedure and Eligibility

Candidates as Volunteer Mentors should satisfy us that they are capable of coping with the intensity of the training and the academic standard required. Candidates are ideally expected to qualifications equivalent to ‘A’ Levels but the most important consideration is the appropriate level of commitment. This could be demonstrated through experience in any professional field. The candidate must have an operational competence in English to at least Level 2 on the National Framework. Where this cannot be proven through official certification, we can arrange for the examination, certification and training if necessary.

In addition to this, the School will offer up to two Doctoral Studentships awarded on a competitive basis to Home/EU or Overseas students, both full- and part-time, registered at one of the School’s institutes, to commence in October 2012.

AHRC BGP Studentships cover fees and maintenance allowance. A full Studentship is offered to those meeting UK residency criteria. EU nationals resident in the EU/EEA are eligible for a fees-only Studentship.

School Doctoral Studentships cover tuition fees and a maintenance grant. Students assessed for fees at the Overseas rate will be required to pay the difference between the Overseas and Home/EU fee. Only those students about to start their first year of study are eligible.

The current maintenance rates for both Studentships are £15,590 full-time and £9,355 part-time. Rates may be subject to change.

The Chinese Government Scholarships is a scholarship programme that covers tuition fees, living allowance, normal medical service, comprehensive insurance, etc., but not international travel expenses. Master and PhD studies supported by the programme will begin in early September 2012 at Beihang University. The total duration of study is 2-3 years for master programs and 3- 4 years for PhD programs.
